COURSE INFORMATION: A continuation of ESOL 0343. This course concentrates on the development of writing skills as well as vocabulary skills. Students learn to write short simp= le paragraphs in the beginning of the semester and then multi paragraph compositions following certain rhetorical styles later in the semester.

ESOL 0347 STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:<= /span> Seeks to prepare students for continuation into ESOL 0351 and ultimately for college level academic or workforce study by accomplishing the following objectives:

Strengthen student awareness of the basic principle= s of organization of the single-paragraph composition, focusing especially = on the role of the topic sentence, examples, details, and the conclusion;=
Strengthen student awareness of the nature of the writing process, focusing especially on the areas of effective prewrit= ing, composing, revising and editing;
Strengthen students’ skills in the basic prin= ciples of sentence combination, focusing especially on the role of subordinat= ing and coordinating conjunctions.

COURSE OUTCOMES: At the end of this course, you should be able to do the following:

Be able to write a well-organized paragraph of betw= een 15-20 sentences and 100-150 words;
Be able to choose a topic and then write an appropr= iate title;
Be able to write a basic outline of his/her paragra= ph;
Be able to write a topic sentence, a conclusion, and examples with details for his/her paragraph;
Exhibit familiarity with the use of coordination and subordination. The paragraph should have variety of sentence types and= not consist of all simple sentences.
Exhibit familiarity with the main stages of the composing process: pre-writing, composing, proofreading, and revising;=
Exhibit familiarity with basic rules of capitalizat= ion, punctuation, and proper academic essay format.

INFORMATION REGARDING REWRITING OF COMPOSITIONS: After each paragraph/composition that you write, I will mark and grade them. You will then take them home and re= write them in order to correct the errors that you made. This is an essential part of this course. You learn from your mistakes by correcting them. Students who do not rewrite and turn in these papers will receive lo= wer grades for class homework and participation.

MISSED COMPOSITIONS: There are no makeup compositions. In the ev= ent you miss an exam, the assigned grade is 0.

ASSIGNMENTS<= span style=3D'font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt'>: You are responsible for all work t= hat you miss if you are absent, including homework. Please get a classmate's phone num= ber to find out what your assignments are or if a quiz is going to be given. Come to class prepared! All work is due on the day assigne= d or a 0 will be given for that assignment.

ATTENDANCE: If you exceed a total of 8 h= ours absences in any class, you will receive an automatic W<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> (Withdrawal) in all four courses. If you are an F-1 student, this will place you out-of-status.

LATENESS: If you are 15 minutes late for 3 classes, it will be marked as one absence

CLASS PARTICIPATION: Your class participation reflects = your attendance in both class and lab, speaking English in the classroom, and cl= ass contribution. Students who display disruptive be= havior in the classroom will have points deducted from final grades.

GRADING: You must have a passing grade of 7= 0 or more in at least two of your classes in order to go on to Level 3.

A &= nbsp; 100 - 90

B &= nbsp; 89 - 80

C &= nbsp; 79 – 70

IP &= nbsp; 69 or less =

This grade reflects the student completed the course, = including the final examination, but couldn't get a passing grade. This option helps students who are= on financial aid to continue for another semester without affecting their gran= t.

This grade is reserved for students who have consistently not done their work all semester and/or have exhibited behavioral problems all semester.

SCHOLASTIC DISHONESTY: Plagiarism, cheating, and ot= her forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited by College System policy and t= he rules of this class. Plagiari= sm involves using the ideas or words of another person (either in whole or in part) without crediting the source. Cheating involves fraud and deception for the purpose of violating legitimate testing rules. A s= tudent guilty of a first offense will receive a grade of F on the assignment involved.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> For a second offense, the student = will receive a grade of&nbs= p; F for the course.
