Catalog Description
This course is an examination of painting,
sculpture, architecture, and related arts covering the Paleolithic
through Gothic periods. Also covered is the art of non-Western
cultures. This course satisfies the cross-cultural component.
Course Purpose
This survey course introduces the visual
arts and explains the role they have played in history using examples of
sculpture, painting, architecture, and craft art. Art History I will cover the
period from 28000 BCE. to 1300 CE. And art of non-Western cultures.
Description of Course Content
The course surveys major western art
historical movements from prehistoric times up to the Late Gothic period as
well as art of non-Western cultures. Major areas of study include: the Birth of
Art, Ancient Near Eastern Art, Egyptian Art, Aegean Art, Greek Art, Etruscan
Art, Roman Art, Early Christian Art, Byzantine Art, Islamic Art, Early Medieval
Art in the West, Romanesque Art, Gothic Art, the Art of Indian Asia, the Art of
China and Korea, the Art of Japan, the Native Arts of the Americas and Oceania,
and the Arts of Africa. The course includes lectures, readings, slide
presentations, class discussions, and written assignments regarding the art and
concepts essential to the understanding and analysis of the material. This
class meets all core curriculum competencies including listening, speaking, critical
thinking, and computer literacy

Objectives and Requirements
By the end of the semester the student who
passes with a final grade of "C" or above will have demonstrated the
ability to:
* Complete and comprehend all graded
assignments
* Be prepared for and participate in class
discussions
* Maintain good attendance missing no more
than 12.5% of instruction
* Complete a minimum of 2000 word term paper
* Maintain an average of 70 or above on
assignments and tests
* Explain and illustrate stylistic
characteristics of each of the various cultures and styles included in the
course syllabus
* Compare and contrast works of art from the
text using the terminology and iconography of art
Grading
Your grade will be averaged from exams, a
term paper, the final exam, online quizzes, and class participation. Your
lowest test score (excluding the final) will be dropped. Chapter (online)
quizzes will be averaged and weighted as a single test score. So you will have
the three highest tests scores, your quiz average, the paper, and your final
all averaged equally. Your participation will account for up to five points of
your final grade.
Attendance Policy
Coming in late to Art History class is
disruptive as we are in a darkened room. The state guidelines allow no more
than 6 absences total. Consistent tardiness will negatively affect then
participation part of your grade.

accommodate.
