Biobrief
Higher Education: Pan American University and University of Houston. Degrees: BA in Psychology; MA and PhD in English; all three awarded by the University of Houston.
I took and passed comprehensive exams in the following fields to qualify as a doctoral candidate: Rhetoric and Composition, Critical Theory, Medieval British Literature, and Modern British Literature. My doctoral thesis of 1997 was the first book-length study of Richard Rodriguez's nonfiction classic Hunger of Memory.
Teaching Experience: I have taught collegiate English writing (also known as “composition”) for twenty-three years. I have also enjoyed teaching literature and developmental writing courses along with several English as a second language classes.
Some career highlights--
I served as co-founder and co-sponsor of Southwest Writers, an organization open to all Houston Community College students interested in writing, from 2000-2005.
Proudest moment in my career: In spring of 1999, three former students of mine, all on the same evening, received first or second place writing prizes for the academic year 1998-1999 at the University of Houston Downtown.
Second proudest moment: When I was nominated to the Who's Who of American Teachers by a former student of mine at HCC a few years ago. (Not one of the three above mentioned :)
Current project: I would like to collect student nonfiction prose writing for online and conventional publication. If you would like to work with me toward that goal, send me an email.
