Course Catalog Description/Course Prerequisites:
This course involves the basic study of the structures and function of human cells, tissues, and organ systems including skin, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. The Biology department and this instructor strongly recommend taking BIO 1406 prior to BIO 2401. We have noted a substantial advantage for students having had BIO 1406 prior to taking A&P 2401. As a result, students are informed, via this syllabus, that students having substantial prior knowledge of basic biology will gain a significant advantage over students that have NOT taken BIO 1406. The material tested on TEST #1 will relate to information found and studied in BIO 1406. Hence, having some knowledge of this (TEST #1) information prior to class will provide a stronger base for success on TEST #1.
Course Intent:
This course is intended for students majoring in one of the physical sciences or life sciences, engineering, or for students who are pursuing pre-professional programs in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, or other health programs. The course is also beneficial to students who are preparing themselves for higher level science courses in their respective curricula.
Attendance Policy:
The HCCS attendance policy is stated in the Schedule of Classes: ?Students are expected to attend classes regularly.? Students are responsible for materials covered during their absences, and it is the student's responsibility to consult with instructors for make-up assignments.? Class attendance is checked daily by instructors.? Although it is the responsibility of the student to drop a course for non-attendance, the instructor has full authority to drop a student for excessive absences.? A student may be dropped from a course for excessive absences after the student has accumulated absences in excess of 12.5% of the hours of instruction (including lecture and laboratory time).?? Note that 12.5% is approximately 4 classes or labs for a 4 semester hour course, such as this one, which meets twice per week in a 16 week semester.? If circumstances significantly prevent you from attending classes, please inform me.? I realize that sometimes outside circumstances can interfere with school, and I will try to be as accommodating as possible, but please be aware of the attendance policy.
Last Day for Administrative and Student Withdrawals:
See Semester Course Offering Schedule for ADMINISTRATIVE dates. It is vital that students prepare themselves for the subject-matter prior to THIS date. The instructor urges students to seek assistance in a timely manner. The instructor will, throughout the term, offer suggestions and strategies that improve comprehension and level of understanding. If assistance is needed, please contact me at my email address.
New Institutional Policy:
Students who repeat a course for a third or more times
may soon face significant tuition/fee increases at HCC and other Texas
public colleges and universities. Please ask your instructor / counselor
about opportunities for tutoring / other assistance prior to considering
course withdrawal or if you are not receiving passing grades.
International Students:
Receiving a W in a course may affect the
status of your student Visa. Once a W is given for the course, it will
not be changed to an F because of the visa consideration. Please contact
the International Student Office at 713-718-8520 if you have any
questions about your visa status and other transfer issues.
Disability Support Services (DSS) ? ADA:
?Any student with a documented disability (e.g. physical, learning, psychiatric, vision, hearing, etc.) who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the Disability Services Office at the respective college at the beginning of each semester. Faculty are authorized to provide only the accommodations requested by the Disability Support Services Office.? If you have any special needs or disabilities which may affect your ability to succeed in college classes or participate in any college programs or activities, please contact the DSS office for assistance. (At Southwest College, contact Dr. Becky Hauri, 713-718-7909; also see class schedule for additional DSS numbers.)
Academic Honesty:
Students are responsible for conducting themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling course requirements.? Disciplinary proceedings may be initiated by the college system against a student accused of scholastic dishonesty.? Penalties can include a grade of "0" or "F" on the particular assignment, failure in the course, academic probation, or even dismissal from the college.? Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating on a test, plagiarism, and collusion.
Laboratory Policy:
Lab safety is stated in the A&P lab manual. Glasses or goggles must be worn at all times during laboratory procedures (i.e. cat dissection). Students should examine lab manual safety section/lessons for review and improved understanding of subject content. The lab exam, at the end of the term, requires application of subject-matter found in the lab manual.
Assignments/Exams : Make-up Policy and Grading:
We will have the following:
15% each: 3 UNIT Exams
15%: 5 Short Unannounced Quizzes ?
Based on Concepts covered between Unit Exams - Daily Work (ON-LINE OR IN-CLASS)
15% Lab Exam (Comprehensive)
25% : Final Exam (Comprehensive)
NO Make-up exams will be given. In rare circumstances (medically documented), the instructor will make the following allowance:
Missed Unit Exam:
The Final Exam grade will count TWICE - towards the missed test as well as the final exam.
Quizzes -The LOWEST QUIZ GRADE will be DROPPED. A MISSED quiz will count as the DROPPED quiz.
Lab Exams and Final Exams will have NO make-up allowance, so make every effort to take THESE exams on their scheduled dates.
Tests will be MC and/or SA format. Students should focus on the THREE:
1) Class Notes
2) Textbook Citations and Discussions
3) PICTURES cited in class from textbook.
Final Grade "Calculator"
Test #1 + Test #2 + Test #3 = Total/3 = Test Average
Lab Exam = Grade for Lab Exam
Quiz#1 + Quiz#2 + Quiz#3 + Quiz#4 = Total/4 = Quiz Average
Final Exam = Grade for Final exam
Formula: (Test Average x 45%) + (Lab Exam x 15%) + (Quiz Average x 15%) + (Final Exam x 25%) = 100%
Letter Grade Assignment:
A = 90-100%????????????? B = 80-89 %??????????????? C = 70-79 %?????????????? D = 60-69 %?????????????? F = 0-59 %
