ESOL 0348 Intermediate Grammar Syllabus

ESOL 0348 is a continuation of ESOL 0344. This course reviews the basic sturctures of English grammar and develops the production of complex English sentences.

1.  STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:

ESOL 0348, Intermediate Grammar, seeks to prepare students for college level academic or workforce study by accomplishing the following objectives:

a.  Building on the syntactic knowledge that sutdents ahve gained in previous study of English grammar while introducting more advanced structures.

b.  Strengthening students' abilities to produce the new grammatical structures in a variety of communicative contexts.

2.  COURSE OUTCOMES:

After taking ESOL 0348, Intermediate Grammar for Foreign Speakers, the student should:

a.  be able to demonstrate mastery of everything covered in ESOL 0344, Beginning Grammar for Foreign Speakers.

b.  be able to demonstrate mastery of when to use present continuous over simple present, as well as simple past vs. past continuous.

c.  be able to demonstrate mastery of formation of sentences with simple modals (can, will, must, have to should, ought to, might, may) although s/he may still have problems in choosing the appropriate form for a given context.

d.  be able demonstrate mastery of the present perfect forms, both affirmative and negative;  students at this stage will still make mistakes in choosing when to use the present perfect, confusing it with the present or past.

e.  be able to demonstrate mastery of comparative and superlative forms of adjectives and adverbs including irregular forms

f.  be able to demonstrate mastery of count vs. non-count nouns.

g. be able to show familiarity with the structure of gerunds and infinitives.

h.  be able to show familiarity with phrasal verbs.

4.  GRADE BREAKDOWN:

Your grade will be calculated as follows:

Week 3: Units 4, 5;  Exam 1

Week 4:  Units 6, 8; 

Week 5:  Exam 2; Unit 16

Week 6:  Units 17, 18, 19

Week 7:  Units 20, 21;

Week 8:  Exam 3;  Units 22, 23

Week 9:  Unit 24;  Midterm

Week 10:  Units 11, 12, 13

Week 11:  Units 14, 15, 32

Week 12:  Units 33, 35, 36

Week 13:  Exam 4, Unit 37

Week 14:  Units 38, 26

Week 15:  Unit 30;  Prep for Final

Week 16:  FINAL EXAM
