ESOL 0345 Intermediate Conversation Syllabus

1. 0345 is a continuation of ESOL 0341. This course places emphasis on idiomatic speech, everyday vocabulary development, and listening comprehension.

2.  ESOL 0345 STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:

0345, Intermediate Conversation, seeks to prepare students for college level academic or workforce study by advancing them from high beginning to high intermediate level in the following English language skills:
a.  Listening comprehension
b.  Oral fluency
c.  Acitive vocabulary
d.  Pronunciation

3.  COURSE OUTCOMES:

After taking ESOL 0345, Intermediate Conversation for Foreign Speakers, the student should be able to perform the following language functions at a high intermediate level:

a.  Listening Comprehension

Predict the direction a speaker's discourse will take

Identify the speaker's main idea and details

Guess meaning from context

Summarize the discourse

Make inferences

Take notes on a lecture

b.  Fluency

Express ideas and emotions on a given topic

Ask for clarification from others

Compare opinions and discuss differences

c.  Vocabulary

Understand and use new vocabulary relevant to given topic

Understand and use idiomatic expressions presented in discourse

Expand understanding of the meaning, usage, and word forms of vocabulary items in differnt contexts

D.  Pronunciaton

Understand and use appropriate word and sentence stress

Understand and use statement and question intonation.

Understand and use correct pronunciation or plural "s" forms

Understand and use common reductions and contractions

Understand and use pauses between thought groups

Understand and use contrastive stress for new or contradictory information.

4.  GRADE BREAKDOWN:

Your grade will be calculated as follows: 

Oral Presentations -- 45%;  Participation/Attendance -- 25%;  Home/class work -- 10%;  Final -- 20%

You are required to buy the foloowing textbook for this course:

        NorthStar:  Focus on Listening and Speaking, Intermediate, 2nd Edition,  by Helen S. Solorzano and Jennifer P. L. Schmidt.

Week 4:  Presentation #1; Unit 2;

Week 5:  Unit 2

Week 6:  Unit 3

Week 7:  Unit 4

Week 8:  Presentation #2; Unit 5

Week 9:  Unit 6

Week 10:  Unit 7

Week 11:  Unit 8

Week 12:  Unit 9

Week 13:  Prepare final presentations

Week 14:  Final presentations

Week 15:  Unit 10

Week 16:  FINAL EXAMS
