BIO:
James Wright holds a Ph.D. in English and American literature from the University of Houston. His scholarly interests include working-class culture, rhetoric and composition, and popular culture. James taught at the University of Houston for four years, and this fall is beginning his sixth year as a member of the English department at Houston Community College, Southwest. This fall James is teaching two sections of English 1301 and three sections of English 1302. A frequent book reviewer, some of his most recent include "Class Consciousness Revisted," a review of Dagoberto Gilb's The Flowers (Spring/Summer 2008 Texas Books in Review), "The Citizen Photographer," a review of Witness for Justice, an anthology of photographs by Alan Pogue, the longstanding chief photographer for the Texas Observer (Spring/Summer 2008 Texas Books in Review), "Pater Familias," a review of Donald Barthelme's Flying to America: 45 More Stories (Winter 2007/08 Texas Books in Review), “Community Vision,” a review of O.Rufus Lovett’s Weeping Mary, a book of photographs of the citizens of the East Texas town of the same name (Summer/Fall 2007 Texas Books in Review), and a review of David Dorado Romo's Ringside Seat to a Revolution: An Underground Cultural History of El Paso and Juarez 1893-1923 (Fall 2006 Southwestern American Literature). His interests in Composition Theory and Literature often lead him to present at academic conferences. In March of 2009 James will give a presentation in San Francisco on multiculturalism, citizenship, and the composition classroom at the Conference on College Composition and Communication, the annual conference for college composition teachers at which James regularly presents. James also regularly presents work at literature and other academic conferences, and will give a presentation on the work of Ray Gonzalez at the annual South Central Modern Language Association Conference this November.
