Lecture/Lab. Tuesday /Thursday, 5.30-8.30 P.M., Room # S103.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course focuses on an introduction to biological
chemistry, biological processes, cellular morphology, reproduction, genetics inheritance and
molecular biology.
PREREQUISITE: One Year of High School Biology (High School Chemistry is
recommended, but not required).
COURSE GOAL: This course is designed to impart a basic knowledge of life processes to
students who intend to major aspect of the life science. It is prerequisite to Biology1407 (General
Biology II), Biology 2401 (Anatomy & Physiology), and Biology 2420 (Microbiology). Biology
1406 &1407 are transferable as one year of General Biology course at most
academic institutions.
RULE & REGULATION:
1. Class attendance is checked regularly. Although it is responsibility of the student to drop
a course for non-attendance. Four absences (includes lecture and laboratory) will result in
administrative withdrawal by the instructor.( For attendance policy checked HCCS schedule of classes).
2. Adherence to laboratory safety rules is required. Do not eat food, drink beverages or
chew gum in the classroom. Turn off ringer of cellular phone during class and exams.
3. After each experiment, clean the glass - wares, placed chemicals and apparatus at
proper place/ shelf, and finally clean up your bench and arrange everything nicely before leaving the classroom so that other student can use for next class. Wash your hands after each experiment.
4. Lab reports: Although students will work in the groups but individual participation is
expected. Lab work is integral part of the course. Lab reports will be turned after the
experiment, in the next meeting. Lab reports will be checked for grading, and it will also
help to determine your performance in the lab exam.
5. Academic Honesty-If cheating is found, he/she will not receive any grade for that part of this course.
6. Exam and Make-up policy-No makeup exam will be given, instead, the grade achieved on the final exam will be substituted for the miss exam or exams .You must make every effort to take the exams on their schedule dates. No curves for any exam.
Lecture exams may include multiple choice, matching, fill in the blanks. There are three or four non-cumulative regular exams and a comprehensive final examination. All student are required to make final exam( no student can be exempted). A student who completes the course by taking Final exam can not receive W in the course.The exams are graded on a100 point scale and overall 5 points awarded as extra credit based on active participation in class and a scientific report (2-4 pages essay on any scientific topics related to biological science) must submitted by mid-semester and discuss at the end of semester.
7. For 16 week Spring,06 class last day for administrative and student withdrawals is 6th,April .

GRADE COMPUTATION: The overall score is based on the following:
i. 3 or 4 lecture exams 60 %
ii. A comprehensive final exam 20 %
iii. One Lab exam 10 %
iv. Lab reports 10 %
v. Scientific report presentation for extra credit 5 point
The Grading Scale:
A = 90-100 %, B = 80-89 %,
C = 70-79 %, D = 60-69 % and
F = Below 60 %
