Rm. W125/ S118 Scarcella Tech. Bldg.
PREREQUISITES: General Biology 1406
OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this course is to give the student a sound
basis and understanding of microscopic forms of life, their
physiology and relationships to natural processes and
other living things, and their importance in science, medicine,
and technology. Core curriculum competencies will be
addressed in this course. See the Student Catalogue for a
statement of core competencies.
LABORATORY REPORTS:
The laboratory is a very important part of the course and the
laboratory reports will be handed in and checked. The labs will
help determine your overall grade as explained below. You are
required to read the lab procedure before attending the lab
and to follow all safety rules as outlined in the lab manual or
those given by the instructor.
EXAMINATIONS:
Lecture exams may consist of any type of question:
essay, multiple choice, true-false, matching, diagrams,
and/or short answer. They will cover the material we
cover in class as well as assigned reading, and may be
comprehensive to include previous material. Lab exams
will cover the material we cover in labs (but information
sometimes overlaps with lecture) and may have a written
as well as practical component. Exams may not be
permanently returned to the student after testing. Exams
are timed and do not take the entire class period.
Remaining class time may be utilized for lecture or lab,
whichever applies.
MAKE-UP EXAMINATIONS:
There will be no make-up lab practical exams.
If a lab exam is missed, the written portion of the exam
may be given at the discretion of the instructor and with
proper medical excuse. If a lecture exam is missed, it
may be taken at a later date only with a medical excuse
(or other excuse acceptable to the instructor). A missed
exam that is not made up will enter as a grade of zero.
GRADE DETERMINATION:
LECTURE (80%) LAB (20%)
Exam 1 100 points Lab Reports/Performance 20 points
2 100 points Lab Practical 1 40 points
3 100 points Lab Final 40 points
Final 100 points
PLEASE NOTE:
There may be a fourth lecture exam.
There may be chapter questions assigned and/or
an optional extra credit assignment announced at a later date.
You may have two outside reading assignments.
Extra credit assignments do not replace a lecture exam grade.
GRADING SCALE: 90 - 100 = A
80 - 89 = B
70 - 79 = C
60 - 69 = D
<60 = F
ATTENDANCE:
It is the responsibility of the student to come to class
and to get the notes and information from a fellow classmate
when he or she is absent. You will be allowed four absences
in a spring or fall semester. Upon your fifth, I will enter an
administrative drop . If you are late to class by fifteen minutes
or more, you will be considered tardy. Three times tardy will be
counted as one absence.
CHEATING:
There will be no talking, looking on other student's papers,
or in any way trying to cheat on examinations. This can lead to
expulsion from Houston Community College (see Student
Handbook). If I observe cheating behavior during a test, you
will receive a zero for that test.
General rules:
1. No eating or drinking in labs or classrooms (water
bottles are permitted).
2. No cellular phones or beepers are permitted to be on.
3. All exams and scantrons are to be returned to the
instructor at the end of the semester.
After testing, some exams may not be returned.
Exams are not to be photocopied.
4. If you have a condition which will affect performance
of a lab or assignment, please inform the instructor. We
will be handling infectious, living pathogens.
5. All rules of the college apply. Know the safety rules as
applied to the lab component of this course. Repeated
violations will result in loss of points.
6. No sleeping or resting of the head on a desk.
7. No grades of "W" will be entered after the drop date.
You should see the instructor or counselor before
dropping the course.
8. The use of recording devices, including camera phones
and tape recorders, is prohibited in classrooms, laboratories,
faculty offfices, and other locations where instruction, tutoring,
or testing occurs. Students with disabilities who need to use
a recording device as a reasonable accommodation should
contact the Office for Students with Disabilities for information
regarding reasonable accommodations.
9. "Notice: Students who repeat a course three or more times
may soon face significant tuition/fee increase at HCCS and
other Texas public colleges and universities. If you are
considering course withdrawal because you are not earning
passing grades, confer with your instructor/counselor as
early as possible about your study habits, reading and writing
homework, test-taking skills, attendance, course participation,
and opportunities for tutoring or other assistance that might be
available."
Please note: " Students who repeat a course for a third or more times
may soon face significant tuition/fee increases at HCCS and other
Texas public colleges and universities. Please ask your professor/
counselor about opportunities for tutoring/other assistance prior
to considering course withdrawal or if you are not receiving passing
grades. "
PLEASE NOTE: The instructor reserves the right to amend
or change the syllabus as necessary should circumstances
arise during the semester.
