In 1974 Cheryll Ann Cody received her Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum laude in History and English from the University of Minnesota She continued her studies there, completing her Master of Arts degree in American History in 1977. In 1982 she earned a Ph.D. in American History with supporting fields in Geography and Anthropology, also at the University of Minnesota. A specialist in Southern history with an interest in family and demography, her dissertation “Slave Demography and Family Formation: A Community Study of the Ball Family Plantations, 1710 – 1896,” has provided the basis for several of her refereed articles. In 1996-1997 she returned to graduate school completing an additional nine semester hours in the Department of Geography at the University of Texas at Austin.
Her publications include “There was No Absalom on the Ball Plantations: Slave Naming Practices in the South Carolina Low Country, 1720 – 1833, ” which originally appeared in the American Historical Review and has been reprinted several times, most recently in Slavery: A Reader, edited by Gad Heuman and James Walvin. She also published “Naming, Kinship, and Estate Dispersal: Notes on Slave Family Life on a South Carolina Plantation, 1786 to 1833, “ in The William and Mary Quarterly, In addition she has published essays in Ethnohistory and Southern Studies and contributed her work to More Than Chattel: Black Women and Slavery in the Americas edited by Darlene Clark Hine and Barry Gaspar and Working Toward Freedom: Slave Society and Domestic Economy in the American South edited by Larry Hudson.
A three time recipient of an NEH Travel to Collections Grant, Dr. Cody has also received funding for her research from the Andrew Mellon Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the American Historical Association’s Albert Beveridge Grant for Research in the History of the Western Hemisphere. She has presented research papers and served as commentator at both national and international meetings including the I.U.S.S.P. Conference on the Peopling of the Americans in Veracruz, Mexico and the XVII International Congress of Historical Sciences in Madrid.
