Correction Key

The correction key shows the abbreviated markings that writing teachers put on students' essays to identify basic sentence, word, grammatical, and manuscript form errors.

4.     cs -  comma splice

6.     gb - garbled sentence

7.     vf - verb form

9.     wu - word usage

10. ww - wrong word

11. ag - agreement

12. sg - singular

13. pl - plural

14. awk - awkward phrasing

15. in - inflated language

16. wdy - wordy

17. rep - repetitious

18. vg - vague

19. fl - faulty logic

20. mm - misplaced modifier

21. dm - dangling modifier

22. x or ______ (line through)

       means to eliminate

23. mf - manuscript form

24. sp - spelling

25. cp- capitalization

26. pc - punctuation

27. unn - unnecessary

28. mg - margin

29. pp - paragraph

30. > - a caret - means to insert

31. [ ] - brackets- inclusive means comment applies to what’s inside

32. --------------> or  <---------------- means to follow to

33. curved lines with arrows - means to invert

PROOFING TIPS FOR SUPER WORK

1.     Do not abbreviate (exceptions: certain titles like Dr., Ms., or Mr.)

2.     Write Out Number Words        (Exceptions: time, date, or money)                   A.  10:00 a. m.           B.  July 1, 1997       C.  $16.35

3.     Avoid ‘thing’ words (thing, anything, something, nothing, etc., - they are too vague - be more specific

4.     Do Not Use Contractions in Formal Writing (Only exception is direct quotations.)

5.     Do not write in Second Person (That means the words -you, your, yours, yourself)  Write in First Person or Third Person

6.     Do not cross out words on final copies - correct neatly or recopy
