Course Descriptions
SPCH 1311 Fundamentals of Speech Communication. A survey course in the basic principles of oral communication. Includes the study of the use of the body and voice, the speaker-listener relationship, interpersonal communication, oral interpretation, perceptions, self-concept, problem solving and decision making, interviewing, conversation enhancement, and preparation and delivery of platform and non-platform speeches. Open to all students. Required of majors in Speech. A Core Curriculum Course. Credit: 3 semester hours (3 hour lecture).
SPCH 1315 Public Speaking is designed to develop proficiency in public speaking situations; emphasis upon content, organization, and delivery of speeches for various occasions. Open to all students. Required of majors in speech. Prerequisite: SPCH 1311 or ENGL 1301. A Core Curriculum Course. Credit: 3 semester hours (3 hour lecture).
SPCH 1318 Interpersonal Communication. A course designed to improve the student’s effectiveness in small-group and one-to-one communication. Open to all students. Required of majors in speech. A Core Curriculum Course. Credit: 3 semester hours (3 hour lecture).
SPCH 1321 Business and Professional Speaking. Applies the techniques of oral communication to situations most common to business and professional people. Covers discussion methods, conference techniques, committee reports, instructions, lectures, and public speeches. Open to all students. Required for speech majors. A Core Curriculum Course. Credit: 3 semester hours (3 hour lecture).
Speech 1342 Voice and Diction 1. Training in the effective use of the voice and body. Includes study of the vocal mechanism and the phonetic alphabet; improvement of enunciation, pronunciation, and articulation. Recommended for non-native speakers. Open to all students. Required for speech majors. Credit: 3 semester hours (3 hour lecture).
SPCH 2335 DEBATE Study of the principles of argumentation and debate. Practice in preparing written and spoken arguments. Open to all students. Prerequisites: Must be placed into college level reading (or take GUST 0342 as a co-requisite) and be placed into college level writing (or take ENGL 0310/0349 as a co-requisite). Credit: 3 semester hours (3 hour lecture).
SPCH 2341 INTERPRETIVE READING Cultivation of the art of oral presentation of literary forms, analysis of thought, development of imagination, communication of emotional values, and individual projects in interpretive reading. Open to all students. Required for speech majors. Prerequisites: Must be placed into college level reading (or take GUST 0342 as a co-requisite) and be placed into college level writing (or take ENGL 0310/0349 as a co-requisite). Credit: 3 semester hours (3 hour lecture).
