Student Complaints
Policies concerning Student Complaints:
Students may file written complaints with the Biology Department. The complaints will be kept in the instructor's file. Frequency and type of complaint will be noted and most likely discussed with instructor.
Avoiding Student complaints:

STICK TO YOUR SYLLABUS. Changing it on the fly is the fastest route to disaster.
- Come to class on time, do not allow students to leave early.
- Be prepared and organized.
- Communicate your educational goals, methods, class rules (why they are important to follow).
- Give clear guidlines concerning grading---decrease subjectivity.
- Make yourself available (email, meeting times, return phone calls).
- Maintain professional relationships with students. (do no become too friendly or detached).
- Keep accurate records (attendance and grades).
- Always be respectfull (even when students are not). Do not chide or demean students.
- Keep talk about your private life/personal interest to a minimum.
- DO NOT READ FROM BOOK.
- Use book and material that students have been required to purchase.
- Watch for cheating (deal with it quickly)
- Maintain discipline (set tone early in the course)
What to do with the unruly student:
- Try to resolve the issue/issues with the student calmly. If you are unable to do that, have the student contact the department office for an appointment.
- If student is demonstrating unacceptable behavior (profanity, aggressiveness, threatening physical injury) contact campus security (718-6777)
